Thermo-Mechanically Treated (TMT) steel rebars (conforming to IS 1786) provide tensile strength in reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structures like foundations, columns, beams, and roof slabs.
In civil construction billing, steel is ordered and invoiced in kilograms or metric tonnes (MT). The universal civil engineering unit weight formula is:
Weight (kg/meter) = (d² ÷ 162.2)
where d is the nominal diameter of the steel bar in millimeters.
Standard IS 1786 TMT Bar Weight Chart
| Bar Diameter | Weight per Meter (kg/m) | Weight per Full Bar (12m) | Standard Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 mm | 0.395 kg | 4.74 kg | Stirrups, rings, tie bars. |
| 10 mm | 0.617 kg | 7.40 kg | Slab reinforcement, lintels. |
| 12 mm (Common) | 0.888 kg | 10.66 kg | Roof slabs, beams, columns. |
| 16 mm | 1.580 kg | 18.96 kg | Heavy beams, load-bearing pillars. |
| 20 mm | 2.470 kg | 29.64 kg | High-rise columns, foundation rafts. |
