Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI) & Weight Standards

The Body Mass Index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a universally accepted anthropometric screening tool used by the World Health Organization (WHO) to categorize individuals into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity ranges.

BMI is calculated by dividing an individual's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters (BMI = kg / m²). It provides an easy benchmark for cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk assessment.

WHO International BMI Classification Table

BMI Range (kg/m²) Weight Classification Associated Health Risk Level
< 18.5 Underweight Nutritional deficiency, weakened immunity, osteoporosis risk.
18.5 – 24.9 Normal / Healthy Weight Lowest statistical risk for cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight (Pre-Obese) Moderate risk of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver disease.
30.0 – 34.9 Obesity Class I High risk of coronary heart disease and metabolic syndrome.
> 35.0 Obesity Class II & III Extremely severe health and cardiovascular risks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does BMI differentiate between muscle mass and body fat?
BMI does not directly measure body fat percentage. Athletes and bodybuilders with high muscle mass may show an "overweight" or "obese" BMI score despite having extremely low body fat levels.
Are BMI cut-offs different for Asian populations?
Yes, the WHO and Indian Health Ministry recommend lower cut-offs for South Asian populations: Overweight starts at 23.0 kg/m² and Obesity starts at 25.0 kg/m² due to higher predisposition to abdominal visceral fat.
What is BMI Prime?
BMI Prime is the ratio of an individual's actual BMI to the upper limit of optimal BMI (25.0). A BMI Prime less than 0.74 is underweight, between 0.74 and 1.0 is normal, and greater than 1.0 is overweight.
