How to Calculate Discounts, Stacked Offers & Real Savings

A discount is a reduction in the basic price of a good or service offered by a seller or manufacturer to stimulate consumer purchasing, clear inventory, or reward loyalty.

Retail promotions often include complex structures like stacked discounts (e.g. 50% + 20% off), Buy One Get One (BOGO), and post-discount sales taxes. Knowing the exact mathematical formula ensures you never overpay or miscalculate savings.

Single Discount Formula
Savings Amount = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)
Final Sale Price = Original Price − Savings Amount

Example: ₹2,000 item with 25% discount → Savings = ₹500, Final = ₹1,500.

Stacked Double Discount (50% + 20% ≠ 70%)
Step 1: Price 1 = Original × (1 − Disc 1)
Step 2: Final = Price 1 × (1 − Disc 2)

Note: 50% off + 20% extra gives 60% effective discount, not 70%.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is an effective discount in stacked sales?
An effective discount is the true percentage saved on the original price when multiple sequential discounts are applied. Because the second discount is applied to the already reduced price, it is lower than the arithmetic sum of the percentages.
How is sales tax calculated on discounted items?
Under standard commercial tax practices and GST regulations, sales tax is levied on the net discounted price (the actual transaction value), not on the original pre-discount MRP.
How do I calculate the original price from a discounted price?
Divide the discounted sale price by (1 − (Discount % ÷ 100)). For example, if you paid ₹800 after a 20% discount, the original price was 800 ÷ 0.80 = ₹1,000.
